A Kuwaiti lawmaker has warned against allowing a national festival to degenerate to a display of immoral behaviour.

“Organisers of the February Nights Festival should pay close attention to some attitudes and behaviour that clash with our Islamic values and social traditions,” MP Waleed Al Tabtabai said. “We are concerned about the inappropriate clothes and the deep cleavages of some of the participants which have no room in our society,” the MP was quoted as saying on Wednesday by the Kuwaiti daily Al Wasat.

The MP said that the government had a moral obligation to keep the pledges it made to the parliament to apply strict regulations on all festivals and social events.

“I must however highlight the positive aspects of the annual festival, such as conferences and cultural and recreational events that have great benefits for Kuwaitis,” he said.

Al Tabtabai has often spearheaded campaigns against “immoral behaviour” and “unacceptable activities” in Kuwait. He once warned against participation in reality show programmes, saying that some of them were “as lethal as terrorism and crimes.”

The “Hala Febrayer” festival is held annually in February to coincide with Kuwait’s National Day and Liberation Day.

It features social events, musical parties, variety shows, cultural activities and folk arts, daily prizes and shopping opportunities.
