Qatar Amir receives His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III

Qatar’s Amir Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani received His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III, Patriarch of the Roman Orthodox Church.

No details were given about the meeting, but , Qatar News Agency (QNA) said that the patriarch “called on HH the Amir to greet him on the occasion of his visit to Qatar.”

Qatar’s Christians, estimated at 100,000, are entirely expatriate workers, mainly Catholics from the Philippines and India.

The first Christian church in the country, St Mary’s Catholic Church, was inaugurated in March 2008 in Doha.

Mar Thoma Church, a Kerala-based Christian denomination in communion with the Anglican and Independent Syro-Malabar Churches, was opened in June 2009 in the Inter-Denominational Church Complex, (IDCC) in Mesaimeer, in the southern suburbs of Doha.

The IDCC, a complex of churches spread over an area of 4,800 square metres, is to host churches for Malabar Orthodox, Syro Malabar, Mar Thoma, Church of South India (CSI), Pentecostal and evangelical groups.
