Speeding and illegal parking top list of traffic violations in Qatar
Speeding and illegal parking topped the list of traffic violations by drivers in Qatar, officers have said amid reports of a 30 per cent increase in contraventions.
However, the hike in the increase is attributed mainly to greater vigilance by the police and a stricter application of the law.
The installation of radars on all highways, streets, intersections and underpasses and a greater police presence have contributed to more bookings against careless drivers.
Authorities in Qatar are hopeful that the new traffic laws and their strict application would bring the country’s roads under greater discipline and compliance with the law.
A study conducted last year by the Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA) and the Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) found that although 77 per cent of Qataris and expatriates saw Qatar as a good place to live in, traffic congestion in Doha was the main bugbear.
Traffic woes coincided with the capital sprawling outwards and more people moving in.
