Bahrain’s MPs meeting in secret session to discuss a report on alleged immoral practices

Bahrain’s parliament is meeting in a secret session to discuss a report on alleged immoral practices in the tourism sector.

The behind-the-doors session was ordered by Khalifa Al Dhahrani, the speaker of the lower chamber, amid speculations that the report by a parliamentary committee would show a film about debauchery, soliciting and illegal practices in some of the country’s hotels.

Journalists, parliament staff, visitors and guests were told that they would be allowed back in the hall after the lawmakers agree to move on to the next item on the session agenda.

The 40-member lower chamber had formed an ad-hoc panel to investigate claims of immoral practices in suspicious hotels and tourism facilities located mainly in areas on or near Exhibitions Avenue and in the Juffair neighbourhood in Manama.

Islamist MPs said that they tasked some people with taking pictures and filming some of the practices to prove to the other parliament members and to the authorities the existence of decadence in outlets under the administrative control of the interior and culture and information ministries.

During the investigation, MPs sat with officials from several ministries and confronted them with some of the evidence they had gathered.

The lower chamber is dominated by Islamists from both sects who have been pushing for the adoption of stricter laws to control blatant and secret abuse of the flourishing tourism by Bahrainis, Arabs and Asians keen on lucrative gains.
