Bahrain’s culture and information undersecretary dies

Bahrain’s undersecretary for culture and information died on Wednesday shortly before noon follwoing a long battle with cancer.

Mohammad Al Banki, the former editor-in-chief of Al Watan newspaper, was earlier this month admitted at the Military Hospital in Riffa after he suffered from abdominal pains.

Al Banki, who holds a Master’s degree in Arabic, replaced Hamad Al Mannai as the ministry’s undersecretary in July 2009.

He has authored several books and written critiques of essays on culture and media.

Al Banki was in charge of the cultural supplement of Al Ayam newspaper before moving to the University of Bahrain where he chaired the media and public affairs directorate. He was appointed editor-in-chief of Al Watan before he moved to the culture and information ministry as advisor to Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammad Al Khalifa.
