Kuwait confirms it is investigating spy cell case

May 3, 2010

Kuwait has confirmed that it was interrogating suspects about their alleged role in a spy cell busted by its security agencies.

“The investigations are still going on, and as soon as they are completed, the suspects will be transferred to the competent authorities,” Mohammad Al Busairi, the government spokesman and state minister for parliament, said on Monday afternoon. “There are suspects and the investigations are continuing, so we do not want to dwell on details for the sake of the investigations,” he said at the parliament.

The official did not mention the number, names or nationalities of the suspects.

Al Busairi on Sunday said that the media had carried several inaccurate reports and urged them not to refer to government or official sources in their quotes.

“Not a single official source had made a statement or gave details about the case, so we urge the media to exercise caution in its reports,” he said.

The government has come under intense pressure from MPs, including Jassem Al Kharafi, the parliament Speaker, to issue a statement on the case revealed in a report published by Al Qabas newspaper on Saturday.

MP Mohammad Al Hayef said that he would call for an extraordinary session of the parliament to discuss the spy cell, explaining that the government should be firm in dealing with Iran.

Al Hayef, a conservative MP, called for expelling the Iranian ambassador in Kuwait and the Kuwaiti ambassador in Tehran and for freezing all Kuwait-Iran agreements in retaliation.

Iran has repeatedly denied any role in the spy cell and its ambassador in Kuwait has, according to Al Anba newspaper, requested a meeting with the Kuwaiti foreign minister who was in the US when the busting was reported.
