GCC to reiterate support to UAE over Iran-held islands

May 20, 2010

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will on Sunday reiterate the UAE’s full sovereignty over the three islands held by Iran, the secretary general of the alliance has said.

“The GCC foreign ministers at their next meeting in Jeddah will discuss several political issues, mainly the status of the three UAE islands,” Abdul Rahman Al Atiyyah said. “The Council will reiterate its support to UAE over the islands and will call Iran to respond to the genuine and repeated UAE calls and settle the issue either through direct negotiations or by taking it to the International Court of Justice,” Al Atiyyah said.

Tehran has invariably refused to take the case to The Hague and the international court can consider a case only if the two parties agree to submit it.

The ministers’ meeting, the 115th since the formation of the six-member alliance in 1981 in Abu Dhabi, will also review relations between the GCC and Iran and the latest developments in Iran’s nuclear programme, particularly last week’s deal, brokered by Brazil and Turkey, to send Iranian low-enriched uranium to Turkey in return for nuclear fuel, Al Atiyyah said.

The latest developments in Palestine, Lebanon, Somalia and the Sudan will also be reviewed by the foreign ministers, less than two weeks after the GCC leaders held their annual advisory summit in Riyadh.
