The Venezuelan embassy in Qatar has screened the Middle East premiere of Miranda Regresa (Miranda Returns), a historical saga depicting the life of Venezuelan revolutionary hero Francisco de Miranda.

The screening, at the Qatar National Theatre, celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Venezuelan Independence on July 5, 1811 and Venezuelan Ambassador Dr Juan Antonio Hernandez said the film screening was part of the embassy’s programme as a run-up to the celebration of 200 years of Venezuela’s independence.

“Miranda Returns reminds us of the foundation of the Venezuelan Republic in which Francisco de Miranda played a major role,” Ambassador Hernandez said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.

The two-and-a-half hour film directed by Luis Alberto Lamata and starring Jorge Reyes depicts the struggle of the epic hero against Spanish colonialism for Venezuela’s independence.

Released in 2007, the film was the big screen debut of state-run cinema production company Villa del Cine which President Hugo Chavez founded ostensibly to revive the country’s film industry and promote Venezuelan culture and values through locally produced films.

In addition to a fresh dramatic portrayal of the hero of the country’s revolutionary past, the multi-million dollar film also features scenic views of Venezuela, Cuba, and the Czech Republic.

Viewers included representatives from the diplomatic community.

The film screening was among events initiated by the Venezuelan mission in Doha.

“We will be organising some events this year in conjunction with the celebration of Doha Capital of Arab Culture,” the Ambassador said.

Qatar is home to around 500 Venezuelans working mainly in the oil and gas sector
