Bahraini security has arrested 12 suspects on charges of acts of arson and sabotage, the Public Security deputy chief has said.

The suspects arrested on Thursday had set tyres, garbage pins, empty water tanks and private property on fire and hurled firebombs on roads in various areas of the country, putting people’s lives at risk, he said.

Two of the suspects were hurt during the clashes with the police in Sitra, south of Manama, and one of them is being treated at Salmaniya Medical Complex, the deputy chief said.

Twenty-five acts of arson and two “illegal” protests were reported yesterday, he said, adding that security personnel found a large number of bottles to be used as Molotov cocktails, 34 tyres and seven water tanks in the Jid Hafs area.

The Electricity and Water Authority said that a major power substation in Sanad had been targeted by saboteurs, causing power outages in areas connected to the substation.

According to a statement by the authority, saboteurs damaged a major 66 kilovolt transportation line feeding the Sanad substation from the Sitra main power station at 2.14am. Emergency teams managed to restore power to some areas in less than an hour and to all affected areas by 4.15am.

The facility was last month targeted in an act of sabotage, the statement said.
