Bahrain arrests suspect in 10-year old suitcase murder case

August 25, 2010

Bahrain’s interior ministry on Wednesday said that it had arrested a Lebanese man in connection with the murder of a Canadian woman in 1999.

The body of the Moroccan-born woman was stuffed inside a suitcase in London’s Heathrow Airport, a spokesman for the ministry said.

“The man, Yusuf Ahmad Msallam Wahid, was arrested following investigations that lasted three months during which the police identified him and discovered that he had entered Bahrain using a Lebanese passport under the name of Ibrahim Fawzi on November 14, 2009,” Brigadier Tariq Al Hassan said. “The public prosecution will now take the appropriate action.”

Scotland Yard on Tuesday said that the suspect had been arrested in Bahrain.

“Detectives had previously appealed to trace Wahid, who was sought in connection with the murder of Miss Fatima Kama,” the London police force said in a news release. “On Tuesday, Wahid was arrested in a pre-planned operation in Bahrain and is now in custody pending extradition to the UK.”

A Heathrow security guard had discovered the body of Fatima Kama, 28, in a foetal position on July 17, 1999 after forcing open a suitcase that had been left on a luggage trolley at an airport car park. A post-mortem revealed she’d been stabbed more than 10 times.

Fatima, a regular visitor to London, was scheduled to fly back to Montreal that evening, London’s police force said.

According to Montreal Magazine, Scotland Yard arrested Abdel Wahid two days after the murder for helping his brother cover up the slaying. However, when Lebanon refused to extradite his brother to London, the charges against Wahid of assisting an offender were dropped.
