10,000 expatriates in Qatar apply for pilgrimage

About 10,000 expatriates have applied to perform haj (pilgrimage) this year, as the deadline for the online registration ended on September 9.

However, registration will remain open for Qatari nationals until the end of the Hijri month of Dhu’l-Qa’da.

With nearly three million Muslims converging in Makkah for the annual ritual, the Saudi authorities have imposed haj quotas on all countries, prompting local processes to limit the number of people who can perform the pilgrimage.

The Department of Haj and Umrah at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs will shortlist the applications after the Eid holidays.

In the selection process, priority will be on a first-come-first-served basis, an official of the department said.

The shortlisted applicants will enter a draw that will decide the final names of those who will perform Haj and the department will send them text messages, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Tuesday.

The selected candidates will have to complete the remaining procedures within a specific period and any failure to do this may result in disqualification, the official said.

All expatriates seeking permission to go for Haj must have a valid residence permit in Qatar and should have lived for at least three years in the country. A minimum of six months validity for the passport is also mandatory.

Applicants who performed Haj in the past five years will be disqualified.

The online registration for expatriates opened on July 18 and ended on September 9.  As part of the preparations for haj, members of the official Haj delegation from Qatar will soon visit the holy sites to inspect the accommodations hired by the haj operators for pilgrims from Qatar.

Operators are responsible for making all the arrangements for the pilgrims.
