Qatar can host World Cup, Zidane says
Football star Zinedine Zidane has thrown his weight behind Qatar’s ambitious bid for the 2022 World Cup, saying youth in the Middle East stood to gain immensely if FIFA’s showpiece event was awarded to the region.
Zidane, who guided France to World Cup triumph in 1998, urged the football governing body to bring the game to the Middle East.
“The World Cup has been to all regions of the globe but not the Middle East. It is a game for everybody,” the 38-year-old told a large gathering of local and international media persons covering the FIFA inspection team’s visit. “If the World Cup came to the Middle East, the youth and football fans in general will gain a lot from this. I support this bid. Qatar has organised many sports events and they can take care of this additional responsibility. I think we can have the World Cup here,” the three-time former FIFA World Player of the Year said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.
