Mohammad Isa Al Mannai, a junior lawyer at Qatar Petroleum, is the first-ever Qatari to become an English Barrister.

“I chose to sign with Qatar Petroleum whereby I was given the chance to study in England under their sponsorship,” said Al Mannai who was born in Qatar and had an Arabic and English school education. “I undertook my Bachelor of Laws at the University of Liverpool in 2004 where I successfully obtained my Honours degree in 2007,” he said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.

He began his work in law as trainee counsel in the projects division within Qatar Petroleum. As part of his development programme he was given the opportunity to complete his postgraduate education, again under Qatar Petroleum’s sponsorship.

Al Mannai chose to qualify as a barrister in England by undertaking the Bar Vocational Course.

“The focus on advocacy, negotiation and litigation was vital when forming my decision to move to London. I was called to the Bar in July 2010. I am now able to become dual qualified in both England and Qatar. I am also well versed in English specialised court procedures, which the Qatar Financial Centre Courts, and other international financial centres, conduct their dispute resolution process under,” he said.
