Qatar bans three variants of popular shampoo
Qatar has banned three more variants of popular brands of shampoo in the local market after their samples failed quality tests, Qatari media reported.
A panel of experts on Tuesday ordered traders to take the shampoo brands “Pantene” (V00912667k2h724), “Blooming” (1028.6) and “Roberta” off their shelves with immediate effect.
The panel, with representation from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, Supreme Council of Health and the Ministry of Business and Trade, cautioned consumers not to use the “tainted” products, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Wednesday.
The expert panel said the compound 1.4-dioxane was found above the permissible limit of 10 parts per million in the samples of these brands. In excess amounts, the compound can cause cancer and skin diseases.
Test conducted by the laboratory department at the Ministry of Environment found that all the three brands of shampoo posed potential health hazards and that they did not match international quality standards.
“Blooming” is a popular shampoo, specially meant for children.
The expert panel said all the variants of shampoos available in the local market, except the recalled three, have succeeded in the quality test and that all of them are maintaining the quality standards.
They wanted the traders to ensure that all their imported products meet the set quality standards of Qatar.
Qatar’s major supermarkets had taken the products off the shelves by afternoon as the news spread, but many retail outlets, unaware of a recall order, continued to sell them.
Doha has recently recalled two variants of popular shampoo brand for failing to meet the country’s quality standards. A few months ago it had recalled four other variants of ‘tainted’ popular shampoos, the paper said.
