Israel must give room for the establishment of a Palestinian state, Qatar’s Emir Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani said following a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

“I would like to assure the Chancellor that we are keen on achieving peace in the Middle East, but Israel must resort to wisdom and give room for the establishment of a Palestinian state that will definitely help maintain security and stability in the region,” Shaikh Hamad said, quoted by Qatar news Agency (QNA).

In her remarks, Merkel said that her talks with the Emir touched the Middle East and the peace process and that it was clear that there was consensus on the need to continue the negotiations and willingness to compromise.

QNA reported Merkel as saying that Arabs supported negotiations through the Arab peace initiative.

In Washington, Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said that Israel must extend its West Bank building moratorium if stalled peace talks with the Palestinian Authority can have any chance of resuming.

Ashton’s remarks were made as American officials were engaged in intense efforts to address the crisis in the peace talks caused by the non-renewal of Israel’s ten-month freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank.
