Kuwaiti coastguards have arrested five Iraqi fishermen on board two boats for violating the state’s territorial waters, an interior ministry official statement said.

The statement, cited by the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) said that the Kuwaitis intercepted the two vessels for fishing inside their territorial waters and that legal measures have been taken against the five Iraqis.

The ministry statement did not elaborate and did not mention when the incident took place.

In May, Kuwaiti coastguards reportedly arrested ten Iraqi fishermen for entering Kuwaiti waters, while Iranian border guards said they arrested nine Iraqi fishermen in Iranian waters in the strategic Shatt Al Arab waterway.
