Qatar call to help Hungarians displaced by red sludge
A senior Hungarian diplomat in Doha said that relief organizations in his country would accept donations from people in Qatar.
Andras Kovacs, deputy head of mission at the Hungarian embassy, told Qatari daily Gulf Times that those wishing to contribute to the disaster relief could send their donations to Hungary’s Red Cross and Interchurch Aid.
Thousands of people have been hit in Hungary after red-coloured sludge began seeping from the reservoir next to an alumina plant before cascading into nearby villages and tributaries of the Danube.
On Saturday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the government had set up a damage mitigation fund to help Hungarians displaced by the red sludge flood and that anyone from anywhere in the world can donate.
In Doha, Kovacs said that a fund-raiser will be held on October 23 marking Hungarian National Day celebrations in Doha, but the event will be limited to the members of the community in Qatar.
According to the diplomat, around 300 Hungarians live in the country.
“Some of them work as sports coaches, musicians and some as pilots with Qatar Airways,” he said.
