Legal experts launch ‘Flotilla Justice Group’

October 25, 2010

International legal experts have launched a campaign group called the ‘Flotilla Justice Group’ in Qatar, to coordinate efforts to get justice for the victims of the May 31 Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla.

The group will facilitate communication and the exchange of information between lawyers working on behalf of victims around the world.

It was launched as 70 legal experts from over 20 countries attended a two-day meeting, sponsored by the Doha-based Al Fakhoora, an international campaign committed to providing and expanding access to education for students in Gaza.

The conference also planned a media strategy for supporting the flotilla campaign, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Monday.

Legal representatives of the dozens of passengers affected by the May 31 attack used the Doha meeting to formalise plans to support one another’s cases in both regional and international courts.

The flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid to the Palestinians under siege when it was attacked by Israel.

Nine Turks were killed and the fatal attack was internationally condemned. It caused deep frictions between Turkey and Israel.

“As long as the Israeli blockade of Gaza continues, education will suffer,” said Farooq Burney, Al Fakhoora director.

“As such, Al Fakhoora fully supports the legal efforts that have been undertaken at national, regional and international levels to protect the humanitarian activists working to take vital supplies to the 1.5 million civilians there,” he said.
