Iraq prime minister Al Maliki to visit Gulf states

November 8, 2010

Iraq’s prime minister will visit five Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to thank them for supporting his country.

Nouri Al Maliki will travel to Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and the UAE to hold talks with the leaders of the countries about the situation in Iraq, the formation of the government and the next Arab summit in Iraq, Kuwaiti daily Al Dar newspaper reported on Monday, quoting well-informed Iraqi sources.
No date was mentioned for the visit, but it is thought to happen within a few days.

According to the report, Al Maliki will “start a new chapter with the Kuwaitis on ways to reinforce bilateral relations”.

“He will prove to the Kuwaitis that Iraq is now past the negative conditions of the past era, and that a new chapter is needed for the benefit of the Kuwaiti and Iraqi peoples,” the sources said. “Al Maliki is grateful to the Kuwaitis for their support of his country and for their role in helping with the formation of the Iraqi government.”
