Opposition MPs in Kuwait ready for clash over rotten food

Kuwait’s government and lawmakers are on a new collision course over attitudes towards a crackdown on sales of rotten food.

The government maintains that it has taken strong measures to curb the sale of rotten food by some local retailers while the MPs, mainly from the opposition, claim that the reaction came too late and the steps taken are not sufficient to protect consumers.

The lawmakers’ condemnation followed revelations by Kuwait Municipality officials that 14 retailers have been referred to the public prosecutor on charges of smuggling products unfit for human consumption into the country, and 18 refrigerated warehouses have been closed down after it was confirmed that rotten meat had been found in them, the Kuwait Times reported on Monday.
