Kuwait police probe attack at political forum

Police in Kuwait have summoned around 40 people as they investigate the physical assault on the owner of Al Soor television station this week.

The suspects were identified through video clips and pictures taken when Mohammad Al Jouwaihal was attacked at a forum held to discuss political developments in Kuwait.

According to Al Aan news portal, the suspects will be transferred to the public prosecutor within two days.

A decision by several lawmakers to hold a series of forums to highlight their stances against official moves they perceived as against the constitution has waded into controversy, and sparked a heated exchange between opponents and proponents of the government, often fuelled by partisan media.

Al Jouwaihail was attacked as he attended such a forum, but his presence and alleged stances against the organisers have resulted in the attack. Jasem Al Khorafi, the parliament speaker, and some lawmakers condemned the attack, saying that it was an unfamiliar and dangerous escalation in an otherwise placid Kuwait.

Al Jouwaihal earlier this year caused uproar in Kuwait when his television station aired a controversial talk show in which hosts attacked tribes in Kuwait and doubted the patriotism of several people.
