Iran to attend Kuwait’s national celebrations

February 5, 2011

Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, Iranian President’s Chief of Staff, will represent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Kuwait’s national celebrations, a Tehran foreign ministry official has said.

Hussain Amir Abdulhayan, the head of the Gulf and Middle East department, made the statement as he congratulated Kuwait on the 50th anniversary of its independence, the 20th anniversary of its liberation and the fifth anniversary of the reign of the Amir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad, Al Watan daily reported.

The US last week announced full support to Kuwait as it marks the national events.

Kuwait is planning massive celebrations of the three events and lawmakers have voted to postpone all their sessions in February to March in order to ensure a festive mood in the country.

The Emir has ordered that all Kuwaiti citizens born before February1, 2011 be given KD 1,000 each and free food essentials for 14 months to mark the occasions.

On Wednesday, the Emir opened the Kuwait National Library and the information minister talked about plans to establish cultural centers and theatres in all governorates, as well as an opera house in the capital in order to boost cultural activities in Kuwait and increase communication and openness between all cultures.
