Kuwait’s interior minister replaced
Kuwait’s Interior Minister Shaikh Jaber Al Khalid Al Sabah was replaced by Shaikh Ahmad Al Humood Al Sabah, Kuwaiti media reported on Sunday.
Shaikh Jaber had offered his resignation on January 13, but was told to keep the portfolio.
According to Al Aan news portal, Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad, the prime minister, was told to accept the resignation handed in by Shaikh Jaber after the death under torture of Kuwaiti citizen Mohammad Al Mutairi in the custody of the police. The case shocked Kuwait and an investigation panel named several officers who were allegedly implicated in the case. Shaikh Jaber said that he was not honoured to lead a ministry that mistreated Kuwaiti citizens.
Kuwait’s parliament was scheduled to discuss on February 8 a move by MPs Shuaib Al Muwaizri, Waleed Al Tabtabai and Salem Al Namlan to grill Shaikh Jaber for his political responsibility over the “death of a citizen under torture, misleading the public and misusing authority.”
However, the parliament last month voted to cancel all sessions in February and to postpone them to March to allow the nation to celebrate a series of patriotic events without further divisions within the society.
Several opposition lawmakers have however rejected the decision and said that they would assemble on February 8 to express their anger with the “procrastination of the quizzing.”
Shaikh Ahmad was an advisor at the Emiri Court since February 2010 and was the first interior minister after the liberation of Kuwait from the occupation by the former Iraqi regime.
