Amnesty for foreigners staying illegally in Kuwait soon

February 24, 2011

A decision granting amnesty to foreigners staying illegally in Kuwait could be issued soon, the social affairs and labour ministry undersecretary has said.

“Once the Cabinet’s Legal Committee completes the final draft, the decision will be approved,” Mohammad Al Kandari said, quoted by local media.

Under the decision, the offer is to open to all illegal residents.

Earlier reports said that residence law violators could either leave the country without paying fines or legalize their residence status by paying fines during the amnesty period.

No date was announced for the grace period, but some reports said that it could start on March 1 to end four moths later on June 30.

Kuwait is home to around 2.2 million foreigners, mainly unskilled labourers and domestic helpers from Asian countries. The population of Kuwaitis is around 1.1 million.
