Bahraini MPs call for martial law

March 14, 2011

The Independents Bloc, the second largest bloc in the lower chamber, on Sunday evening urged King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa to impose the martial law and allow the Bahrain Defense Force to intervene to preserve the nation’s security and stability.

The army will also protect public and private property and ban illegal practices that incite violence and terrorism, terrorise innocent people, threaten civil peace and social security and harm national economy and the country’s higher interests.

The bloc, which holds 12 of the 40 seats of the lower chamber, said that the martial law would be imposed for three months in line with Articles 36/b and 123 of the constitution.

The army will be stationed in the various avenues and areas of Bahrain to reassure the people, protect government and private installations and constitutional institutions and safeguard the nation’s social and economic achievements, the bloc said in a statement.
Bahrain witnessed a day of rare violence on Sunday, mainly in central Manama and at the University of Bahrain.
