First independent Libyan channel to be launched in Qatar

March 29, 2011

The first independent Libyan satellite channel will be launched on Wednesday at a special ceremony Doha’s landmark of Souq Waqif. The channel will start beaming at 6.30pm.

The new station is being set up by a group of Libyans from abroad and inside the country to broadcast news and commentary about Libya, with the aim of promoting dialogue about the country’s future after Muammar Gaddafi’s 42 years in power appear to be drawing to a close.

The channel, to be called Libya TV, is being launched following less than two weeks of hurried preparation. Its founder is the avuncular Mahmoud Shammam, a Libyan expatriate journalist who edits the Arabic section of Foreign Policy.

Libya TV’s initial team of 19 young staffers was assembled partly over Facebook, Shammam said, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported.
