Mousa: Winds of change will reach Iran

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mousa said the current winds of change blowing over the Arab countries will also reach Iran.

“I believe that the remarkable winds of change will not be confined to the Arab world and will also sweep Iran,” Mousa told French magazine Le Figaro. He did not, however, give further details.

In the interview published by the magazine on Friday, the Arab League chief said the presence of forces from the Peninsula Shield, the military arm of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in Bahrain was legal.

Chorus of protests

“The deployment of the troops is legal and is in application of a treaty between the six members of the GCC,” he said in response to a question whether Saudi Arabia was wise in sending its troops to Bahrain.

Tehran has led a chorus of protests over the presence of the GCC military staff in Bahrain and the rhetoric varied between calls to pull them out to open threats of action and formal complaints to the United Nations and other international organisations.

However, Mousa dismissed the moves.

“For us, the situation is crystal clear: Bahrain is an Arab country and so it shall remain. Safeguarding its stability is essential,” he said.
