Kuwait: diplomats must follow official policy line

Kuwait’s ambassadors have to follow the country’s official policy line, a spokesperson at the foreign ministry has said.

“Our diplomats must always adopt Kuwait’s official stances even if they are different from their own views,” the spokesperson said, quoted by Kuwaiti daily Al Watan.

The remarks were published after the foreign ministry recalled its ambassador to Bhutan Nameer Kadhem Al Quraini for allegedly failing to adhere to the country’s policy and calling for the withdrawal of the Peninsula Shield forces from Bahrain.

Al Quraini reportedly used his Facebook account to call upon the international community to “save the Bahraini people from the Peninsula Shield forces”.

Forces from the Peninsula Shield, the military arm of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), entered Bahrain in March following an invitation from Manama under a GCC mutual defense agreement. Kuwait is contributing naval units to the Peninsula Shield.

“We are shocked by the statement of our ambassador and the ministry has recalled him. He will back in Kuwait within two days and he will be asked about his statement. Appropriate measures will follow,” the spokesperson said.

Al Quraini, the first resident ambassador of Kuwait to Bhutan, presented his credentials in December 2010.

Several Kuwaiti MPs said that they would monitor the case and that they would take it up with the foreign minister.
