Kuwaiti death threat caller arrested

May 4, 2011

Kuwait police have arrested the man who had threatened to kill two lawmakers, a news portal reported on Wednesday.

MP Husain Al Qallaf and MP Faisal Al Duwaisan have been receiving death threat calls and messages, believed to be the result of rising sectarian tension in the region.

“The police were able to apprehend the mysterious caller believed to be in his 20s on Tuesday evening and he is now in their custody,” Al Aan said.

Both MPs expressed gratitude to the police, but two more MPs Yousuf Al Zalzala and Adnan Al Mutawa said that the caller should be severely punished.

“We need to set an example so that such attitudes are not repeated,” he said, quoted by the online site. “He may also have accomplices and in that case they too should be apprehended and made to face legal action.”

For Al Mutawa, there should be no tolerance towards people plotting to divide the nation.

The spectre of sectarianism has loomed large in Kuwait and the region in the last three months as tension between Iran and some Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have been locked in a vitriolic war of words. The GCC has harshly criticised Iran for its “blatant interference in their domestic affairs.”

Tehran has invariably denied the charges.
