Kuwait ambassador calls for citizens to obey US residency laws

May 24, 2011

Kuwait’s Ambassador in Washington has called on Kuwaiti citizens travelling to the US to abide by the nation’s residency regulations to avoid possible legal issues.

“In light of the growing number of Kuwaiti nationals visiting the US for various reasons, the embassy in Washington, the general consulate in Los Angeles and all affiliate bureaus of the Kuwaiti diplomatic mission have made all necessary preparations to aid the citizens and answer their queries,” Shaikh Salem Al Sabah told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Diplomats are often wary that a relaxed approach to a strict adherence to regulations and that differences in cultural approaches to sensitive issues between Gulf nationals and Western citizens result in standoffs.

Departure registration cancelled

According to the envoy, a recent decision by the US authorities to cancel entry and departure registration for foreigners would facilitate travel by the Kuwaiti citizens to the country, provided they had valid visas.

Kuwaitis used to face some difficulties due to the former registration system, which was established following the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks.

Thousands of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals visit or live in the US for various reasons, including education, tourism and medical treatment.
