Indian embassy pledges to help septuagenarian in Qatar

May 29, 2011

The Indian embassy in Qatar has pledged to help a 70-year-old Indian national leave the country after being stranded for almost 10 years.

The man, identified as Krishnadas, from the Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala, said that his company had refused to let him go home.

“Now that he has brought the issue to the embassy’s attention, we will take up the matter with his employers and local officials,” Sanjiv Kohli, an official at the embassy, said. “We are hopeful that the issue would be settled once and for all in the shortest possible time,” he said, quoted by Qatari daily Gulf Times.

Under the controversial sponsorship system, no foreigner can enter or leave most of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states without the approval of the sponsor, an individual or a company legally responsible for the movements of the employee.

Attempts by GCC authorities to address the issue have often been foiled by powerful business communities in each of the six countries of the loose alliance under claims that cancelling the system would harm the local economies.

In its meeting with the Indian community in Qatar, the Indian embassy said that 99 death cases had been reported at the embassy since the beginning of this year.

There are 38 Indian nationals, including three women, at the central prison and 67, including eight women, at the deportation centre, the embassy said.

Indians make up the largest expatriate community in the GCC.
