A Saudi businesswoman has accused the family’s driver of raping her under the threat of a gun, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Wednesday.

According to the woman who was not identified, her family in Madinah had hired the driver for SR800 a month to help the women reach their destinations and gradually trusted him to take her to different places.

“The driver was taking me to an address I gave him, when I detected an unnatural smell and noticed that the inside door handle of the car was broken,” she told the daily. “I felt uneasy and told him to take me back to my mother’s home. However, he did not care and continued driving while threatening me to throw me to stray dogs in the area. I started pleading with him, but he took me to a deserted area behind car garages,” she said.

The woman said that she offered the driver SR28,000 she had with her, but he refused, took out a gun and raped her.

“I asked him later to drive me back to my mother’s home and he agreed, but after he threatened to kill me if I told anyone about the incident. I did not care about the threat and alerted the security police who have arrested him,” she said, quoted by the daily.

The paper did not identify the nationality of the driver, but said that the Madinah police were investigating the report.

The report is bound to intensify a heated debate in Saudi Arabia about the right of women to drive after several women sat behind steering wheels and drove in Saudi cities.

One argument often presented by women is that they did not want to depend on or ride with foreign drivers.
