Iris scan to whisk Qatar passengers through airport checks

June 16, 2011

Qatari nationals and resident expatriates may not have to queue up at the immigration counters at the Doha Airport once the “iris scan” database becomes fully operational, a Qatar Airways official said.

Residents whose iris is already scanned and is in the system will pass through without any other formalities, said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways chief executive officer.

“Once the iris scan facility becomes fully operational, I do not think their passports will be checked,” Al Baker said.

“This is because the iris scan will show whether a passenger can exit or enter the country. All the information will be in the database,” Al Baker told Qatari daily Gulf Times.
