Qatar tells would-be pilgrims to register online

June 16, 2011

Qatar’s expatriates who wish to perform Haj this year should submit their applications through the official website starting July 2, the Islamic affairs ministry said.

Applications submitted through any of the Haj operators will not be considered, the ministry said in a statement published in the local press. According to the ministry, online applications will allow would-be pilgrims to choose their operator.

Under local and Saudi Arabian rules, foreigners cannot go to Makkah to perform Haj without being registered with operators.

Qatar has introduced the online registration in a bid to help organise an activity that has often waded into thorny issues related to legal stays and pilgrims’ quota figures.
