Qatar University (QU) has launched a new marine research vessel in Vigo, Spain, to advance marine environmental studies and research in Qatar.

The vessel, donated to the university by Crown Prince Shaikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Chairperson of QU Board of Regents, is named ‘Janan’ after an island located at the western part of the Qatari peninsula. It will replace ‘Mukhtabar Al Bihar.’

“This vessel is equipped with stunning cutting-edge technologies and is expected to advance marine environmental studies and research in Qatar and the Gulf region,” Shaikha Abdullah Al Misnad, QU president, said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.

The ‘Janan’

The ‘Janan’ has an overall length of 42.8 metres, breadth of 10 metres, gross registered tonnage of more than 600 tonnes, a maximum draught of 3.7 metres, which will allow it to reach the shallowest areas of the Arabian Gulf, a normal cruising speed of 12.5 knots and a maximum speed of 14 knots. The vessel can sail for 21 days and accommodate 30 technical and scientific staff.

It is equipped with two main engines, allowing it to work near oil and gas platforms. It also has the ability to function on generators without relying on the major engines, and contains a de-positioning system to stabilise the vessel using satellites.

It has five sophisticated research laboratories, and electrical generators. Facilities also include an environment-friendly sewage treatment unit, water desalination plant, an ER for medical emergencies, and a diving room.

The vessel was built in the Vigo shipyard of Freire, the manufacturer of scientific research vessels.
