Bahrain moves to reinstate wrongfully sacked employees

Bahrain’s prime minister on Sunday gave the private sector 10 days to reinstate wrongfully sacked employees.

Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa has told a committee looking into cases of workers’ dismissal to coordinate with the private sector companies and urge them to reconsider their employment termination procedures in case they were taken against employees who were not implicated in crimes or failed to assume their job responsibilities, Bahrain News Agency reported.

The directive was announced at the weekly cabinet session chaired by the prime minister.

No figure was ever given about the number of employees sacked in the private sector allegedly on claims that they had an active role during the mass demonstrations or the general strike that paralysed the country in March.

Several companies proceeded during the early days of the emergency laws to laying off employees who did not show up to work after March 12, at the heyday of the demonstrations amid calls for a general strike.

The call by Prince Khalifa to reinstate wrongfully sacked workers is the latest in a series of measures taken by the Bahraini authorities to clear up the air in Bahrain following weeks of intense divisions, often alongside sectarian lines

A national dialogue to bring together all segments of society and agree on recommendations for the future of Bahrain was opened on Saturday, but the actual talks among the more than 300 participants will start on Tuesday.
