Kuwaiti denies report of Iraqi spy’s arrest
Kuwait’s interior ministry has denied a local media report that an Iraqi national had been arrested for spying.
“The Iraqi national was arrested for violating Kuwait’s residency laws,” the ministry said. “He had entered Kuwait on a commercial visa, and when it expired and he did not leave, he was arrested for breaking the law by staying illegally in the country,” the ministry said in a statement.
‘Stateless Arab’
The Iraqi national admitted that he had reportedly torn his passport and claimed that he was a stateless Arab, the statement said.
“The man is still under investigation and will be transferred to the court on the charges of breaking residency laws. The claims that he was a spy are baseless and lack credibility,” the ministry said.
Kuwaiti daily Al Anba on Sunday reported that an Iraqi man was arrested on Friday after he provided Iraq with sensitive information about vital facilities in Kuwait.
Citing security sources it did not name, the daily said that the spy referred to as “Abu Ahmad” and who reportedly worked for a communications company, was apprehended upon information that he was collaborating with the Iraqi intelligence and supplying it with classified data. The newspaper said that the man had admitted having links with the Iraqi intelligence services.
