Kuwait may impose visa limits on Egyptians, Indians

September 28, 2011

Kuwait is considering the imposition of restrictions on the number of visas that can be delivered to Egyptians and Indians, a local daily reported.

According to Al Shahed newspaper, the immigration directorate is looking into the move after it noticed a sharp increase in the number of visas delivered to the nationals of both countries following the imposition by Kuwaiti authorities of a ban on visas for nationals from six countries. Citing sources it did not name, the daily said that the visas cap on Egyptians and Indians would not include some professions and the applicants who have university degrees.

The directorate will make an announcement on the issue within days, the sources said. Kuwait in May banned nationals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan from entering the country over fears political unrest in those nations could pose a risk to the Gulf state’s security.

The ban includes trade, tourism and visit visas as well as visas sponsored by the spouse. In August, Kuwaiti media said that Yemen would be added to the list. Indians and Egyptians are among the largest communities in Kuwait where foreigners make up 69 percent of the country’s population.

Some figures estimate that around 600,000 Indians, mainly unskilled labourers, live in Kuwait, where the total native population is around 1.1 million.

A World Bank report in 2010 ranked Kuwait fourth worldwide in a ratio between nationals and expatriates, behind Qatar, Monaco and the UAE.
