Kuwait daily pours scorns on status-conscious councilors

A Kuwaiti daily has poured scorn on the country’s municipal council after it allegedly requested the municipalities’ minister to offer its members Mercedes cars instead of the cars they were given earlier.

According to Al Jareeda newspaper, the council’s secretary general sent a letter to the minister on behalf of the council making the request as the lease contract with the car firm nears its end.

“It seems that the council is jealous of the Kuwaiti lawmakers who drive Mercedes cars and they seemingly want to be treated like them,” the daily wrote in its front-page report where a copy of the letter is displayed.

“The municipal council members have obviously two choices now: Either be ‘humble’ and content themselves with their current cars or work hard and run for a seat in the next parliament where they can have the Mercedes of their dreams,” the daily said.

German cars are among the most coveted in status-conscious Kuwait and the other Gulf Cooperation Cooperation (GCC) countries.

Three of the current municipal council of 16 members are women.
