Four killed at Kuwait’s Al Ahmadi refinery

October 2, 2011

An accident that killed four workers and injured two more at a gas unit at Al Ahmadi Refinery in Kuwait on Saturday will not affect daily operation, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) said.

The accident occurred as routine maintenance work was being carried out at a gas unit, Mohammad Al Ajmi, director of public relations at KNPC, told Kuwait News Agency (Kuna).

The accident was caused by a gas leak at the unit, he said.

The two injured employees were treated and released from the hospital and are recovering, the official said.

“A fact-finding committee has been formed to look into the accident,” Al Ajmi said. “The accident will not affect KNPC’s daily operation.”

A Kuwait news portal earlier said that three firefighters were injured after inhaling toxic gas at the refinery.

Al Aan, quoting a security source it did not name, said that the firefighters were injured as they were dealing with the situation.

According to the portal, MP Waleed Al Tabtabai called upon the oil minister to assume his responsibilities and hand in his resignation.

The refinery is located 45km to the south of Kuwait City.
