Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) will host the “The Dream of a King – Dresden’s Green Vault” exhibition from November 1 to January 26, organisers have said.

One of Europe’s finest treasure collections, “The Dream of a King -Dresden’s Green Vault” has attracted millions of visitors keen on admiring the precious treasures on display.

It showcases around 3,000 masterpieces including jewellery, objects made of amber and ivory, gemstone vessels and bronze statuettes.

The history of the collection goes back to the 18th century when August the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland commissioned one of the top architects of his time to construct a special chamber to house his vast collection of precious objects. He intended for it to be a symbol of his absolute wealth and power.

Visitors to “The Dream of a King – Dresden’s Green Vault” will view examples of Saxon treasury art as well as precious objects that characterised the Baroque period in Western Europe, all dating from the 16th to the 18th century, Qatari daily Gulf Times reported on Monday.

“The exhibition presents a wonderful opportunity to learn about European history and to gain insights into the artist trends that dominated the Baroque period,” Aisha Al Khater, MIA director, said. “We are happy to see the fruition of our memorandum of agreement with Dresden and we invite everyone in Qatar to come visit.”

The temporary exhibition from Dresden, Germany, is visiting Doha under the memorandum of understanding signed between Qatar Museums Authority and Dresden State Art Collections last year.
