Bahrain’s authorities have denied charges that the police was linked to the death of a Bahraini national.

According to Major-General Ebrahim Al Ghaith, the interior ministry’s general inspector, the legal investigation into the disappearance of Yusuf Ahmad Abbas began on January 11, when the young man’s family filed a missing person’s case with the Muharraq Governorate Police.

“The father of the missing man said that his son suffered from psychological problems, sometimes going to the beaches in the area and requiring assistance in returning home,” the investigation report said.

“A search was launched immediately, which included ruling out that Abbas had been detained for questioning or was wanted by police in any criminal manner. The missing man’s parents were informed that their son had not been detained and that the case would remain open until he was located.”

According to the report, the police received a call at around 5pm on January 13, reporting that a dead body was found at the Amwaj Islands.

“The police proceeded to the scene and it was determined that the body was that of Yusuf Ahmad Abbas. An autopsy performed by the medical examiner determined that Abbas had been dead for more than 24 hours and that the cause of his death was drowning,” the report said.

Al Wefaq, the country’s main opposition society, said that it wanted a “neutral commission” to investigate the death amid suspicions of a torture-linked felony.
