Kuwait pledges to donate $1m to Syrians

April 2, 2012

Kuwait has pledged to donate a $1 million to the Syrian people, said Shaikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.

The minister on Sunday said the donation was part of Kuwait’s decision to assist the Syrians by all possible means and aimed to alleviate their suffering and improve their terrible conditions.

The minister also stressed Kuwait’s full support of the mission of the Joint UN and Arab League Envoy Kofi Annan aiming to stem the bloodshed and end violence to allow entry of aid supplies and relief agencies into the country.

“We are hopeful that the Syrian regime accepts fully what was stated in the Annan plan,” he said, quoted by Kuwait News Agency (Kuna).

The Kuwaiti minister added that the Syrian crisis enters its second year leaving behind thousands of people dead, injured, or rendered homeless despite all the measures that had been taken by the Arab League to urge the Al Assad regime to stop the violence against its people.

“Damascus failed to appreciate the significance of the recall of ambassadors to their home nations. It also failed to interpret the formation of the Arab Ministerial Committee to contact the Syrian leadership and it again failed to facilitate the work of the Arab observers’ mission. The scene transpiring in Syria is no longer an internal affair, due to the continued acts of violence and with the state of affairs now recognised as a humanitarian disaster that compels the international community to shed light on the Syrian crisis,” Shaikh Sabah said.
