Kuwait MP warns against mixed college celebration

April 10, 2012

A conservative Kuwaiti lawmaker has warned the government against allowing a university to hold a mixed celebration.

“The mixed party announced by the American University of Kuwait to be held next Thursday is against the religion and traditions of Kuwaitis,” MP Mohammad Al Hayef said.

“The excuse that the get-together is family oriented is not laughable and cannot be accepted. The education ministry has to rein in this disorder that undermines the educational process and results in political clashes and crises. There is also a waste of money, especially that a KD10,500 ($37,635) budget has been allocated,” he said.

Conservatives dominate the Kuwaiti parliament elected on February 2.
