Syrian suspected of killing father and brother arrested in Kuwait

A Syrian national was arrested in Kuwait two weeks after he killed his father and brother and critically wounded his mother, sister and another brother.

Majed Taha Abazaid shot his family members in Daraa, a town in southwestern Syria, on April 3 before fleeing the next day to Kuwait where he took up a job as a driver with a local company.

His gruesome murder was largely reported in the Syrian media.

“My brother came home at around 4am and shot our father, mother and brother,” Hassan Taha Abazaid, the brother who survived the murder attempt, told the Syrian news agency earlier this month. “My father and brother died on the spot while my mother who was shot in the head is still in the intensive care unit. When he tried to shoot me, he had a problem with the gun, which enabled me to wrestle with him. Although he did wound me, I managed to escape to a neighbour’s house while he fled,” Hassan said.

According to Hassan, Majed shot the family following a disagreement over inheritance rights.

A Syrian living in Kuwait reportedly tipped the local police about Majed’s presence in Jahra, an area to the north west of Kuwait City, where he was arrested. He has reportedly told the police that his crimes were motivated by honour.

Security authorities in Kuwait will hand him over to the Interpol.
