Kuwait seeks Arabsat action on ‘antagonistic’ channels

Kuwait is finalising a list of satellite channels carried by Arab satellite provider Arabsat and reportedly targeting Gulf countries, local media reported.

“The move is in line with the national unity law presented by the information ministry to the government,” sources told Arabic daily Al Jareeda.

“The law stiffens punitive measures against channels that attempt to undermine Kuwaiti unity or target Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Carrying channels that fuel sectarianism, hatred and violence or call for changing the political regime of any of the six GCC states is a blatant violation of the accord signed with the GCC members,” the sources said in the remarks published on Sunday.

Around 40 channels of Arabsat are deemed to have antagonistic attitudes towards Bahrain in particular and the GCC countries in general, the sources said.

“International action against channels fuelling sectarianism and hatred will help maintain international security and peace,” they said.

Channels that could be suspended from the pan-Arab provider include Al AlamAl KawtharAl Manar and Press TV, according to the sources that the newspaper did not identify.

“GCC countries have written to the Arabsat seeking legal action against other channels as well, but nothing has happened and the channels continue their antagonistic policies,” the sources said.
