Expatriate arrested for burning tyres in Kuwait

May 7, 2012

Kuwait’s police have arrested an Indian national for allegedly setting tyres ablaze near Rahya.

A large fire broke out last month in the area where millions of used tyres are dumped, causing an environmental catastrophe and sparking calls by lawmakers to hold a special session to discuss the matter.

A second fire broke out over the weekend at a scrap yard, prompting the authorities to intensify efforts to find possible culprits.

According to Kuwaiti daily Al Watan, the suspect denied his involvement in either incident and explained that he was burning tyres to obtain metal rims to sell them.
