A Bahraini exhibition that won the Venice Golden Lion Award will be unveiled at Katara, the Qatari Cultural Village, on May 10.

The ‘Coastal Promenade’ Exhibition by Camille Zachariah, was part of the Bahraini pavilion at the Venice Biennale’s 12th International Architecture Exhibition. It will be on display from May 10 until June 9.

Zachariah, a Bahrain-based photographer, conducted a photographic documentation of coastal areas of Bahrain and the exhibition illustrates landscapes that capture the somber themes of the ecological effects of land reclamation. They also capture lighter looks that explore the ways that these coastal areas are appropriated by their users in landmark photo collages and artist books, to photomontages and documentary photography, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

“Camille Zachariah is one of the finest examples of the emerging talents from the Middle East,” Sidonio Costa, Curator of Visual Arts Exhibitions and Educational Programs, Katara, said. “We are happy to support not only our local artists but also artists of the region. Katara has been committed to providing a platform for talented artists reinforcing our commitment to educate and entertain whilst building cultural bridges.”

Through his work Zachariah addresses issues related to the concept of home, identity and belonging that resulted in a compilation of thousands of individual images which construct larger subjects.

Zachariah uses people, places transformed urban settings, architecture and interiors as subjects to reflect the human condition. His work has been exhibited at prestigious venues across the world and it was shortlisted for the Jameel Prize in 2009, the news agency said.

An educational workshop will be hosted by the artist on June 7.
