The legendary Cirque du Soleil, a dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment, will be performing for the first time in Qatar on July 4-7.

Evoking imagination and senses, the colourful show by 50 artists from 20 countries will tune acrobatics and athleticism into artistic expression while solo spotlights and epic ensembles pump life into each performance, turning each act into story of its own, organizers said.

“Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to be performing for the first time ever in Qatar,” Daniel Lamarre, President of Cirque du Soleil, said.

“Our live touring show Saltimbanco will present excitement and artistry through our unique fusion of acrobatics and circus arts in a live theatrical experience. Saltimbanco has wowed audiences around the globe and we are looking forward to performances in Doha,” he said, quoted by Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Six shows

Six shows will be performed during the four-day stay in the Qatari capital.

The performance’s name Saltimbanco, inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colourful inhabitants, stems from the Italian “saltare in banco,” which literally means “to jump on a bench”.

The show explores the urban experience in all its countless forms in Italy from the people who live there, the street buzzes and the high skyscrapers.

The Canada-based Cirque du Soleil Company made its debut in 1984 with a team of 73 people. The company’s business has now expanded to reach 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists of around 50 nationalities who speak 25 different languages.
