Saudi Arabia denies secret Syria base

Saudi Arabia has denied media reports that it had sent a senior official on a secret visit to Turkey.

The reports that Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah Al Saud, the deputy foreign minister, made a visit to Turkey recently and that the visit was secret are not true, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said.

Reports claimed that Turkey had set up a secret base with Saudi Arabia and Qatar to assist Syria militants with military and communications supplies.

The base in Adana, 100 km from the Syrian border, was set up after Prince Abdul Aziz visited Turkey and requested it, the reports claimed.

However, the ministry spokesman, quoted by the Saudi News Agency (SPA), said that “the last official visit made by Prince Abdul Aziz to Turkey was more than one month ago when he headed the delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations in Istanbul.”

SPA said the foreign ministry spokesman told Reuters that “the very well-known position of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is to extend to the Syrian people financial and humanitarian assistance, as well as calling upon the international community to enable them to protect themselves at the very least if the international community is not able to do so”.

The spokesman added that “the Syrian regime is importing and using all kinds of weapons to fight and oppress its own people in a fierce war”.
